 Fire extinguishers should be visually checked monthly and professionally inspected annually. NFPA 10 requires regular inspections to ensure the extinguisher is charged, accessible, and in working condition. 


No, ABC fire extinguishers, the most common type of fire extinguishers, have a 6-year maintenance cycle. While some other, more specialized fire extinguishers require more frequent maintenance, the ones in most homes and businesses are good for several years.


 Yes. Even if unused, extinguishers have a lifespan. Most last between 3 to 6 years, depending on the type of extinguishing agent. After that time frame, they should be inspected internally and maintained according to NFPA guidelines. 


Your most common fire extinguishers will be dry powder ABC, with an internal maintenance due at 6 years from manufacture, and the last hydrostatic test date. Every 12 years the shell of the fire extinguisher must be hydrostaticaly tested to check for structural stability.
